Retirement
and Medical Facilities in
Virginia
Seniors looking to retire in Virginia have two things going
for them if they have had a military career. Not only are there
outstanding medical facilities and retirement areas but there’s
several outstanding Veterans Medical Centers in the state. Thus
finding a quality Virginia
Retirement Community should include finding medical
facilites nearby.
Veterans can contact the VA for a list of medical facilities
in the state. A few of these include the Hampton VA Medical
Center, Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center and the Salem
VA Medical center. Veterans centers in Alexandria, Norfolk,
Richmond and Roanoke all offer treatments and services for
those that many other Americans consider heroes.
From an outpatient standpoint Charlottesville and Saltville
are but two that can accommodate this. There are also community
based outpatient clinics in Alexandria, Danville,
Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Hillsville, Lynchburg, Stephens
City, Tazewell and Virginia Beach.
An example of one retirement community is that of The
Chamberlain in Hampton Virginia. While many of us are still
active well into retirement, being able to watch ships float
through the breeze of Chesapeake Bay can make younger folks
envious! This is a top notch retirement community with many
details preserved. Independent apartment living is featured
here that is more than just apartments. Granite counters and
decorative trim gives a touch to the home while community areas
including billiards, solarium and a waterfront veranda are
features with many lounge areas that welcome social visits from
guests. A technology center, dining room, coffee bar with café
seating and a variety of meal plans offer convenience and a
full-time onsite wellness coordinator oversees exercise
classes, water aerobics and other activities. There are golf
outings, a walking club, movies, bridge and art activities and
much more. Twice per month housekeeping services are included
in full service packages leaving you free to enjoy living.
Williamsburg Virginia is home to Ford’s Colony. This
residential development was voted America’s #1 Master-Planned
Community and sits on 3000 acres that includes a championship
54 hole golf course. This is gated community living in luxury,
with an award winning restaurant and three onsite dining
opportunities. There’s 14 miles of walking trails for those who
enjoy hiking as well as tennis. For days that are harder to get
out, or less active activities, there are interest groups of a
wide range from bicycling and bird watching to bridge and
poker. There’s bowling, fishing, garden clubs, theater and
travel clubs. A car rally is another activity.
Eaglescliffe homesites are near the country club while the
Westport area has 3-5 acre homesites available and allows for
outdoor activities such as horseshoes, bocce ball and a croquet
course. A patio and grill with outdoor fire pit allows for
grilling whenever you choose to do so. The historical aspect of
this area isn’t forgotten, as colonial Williamsburg was among
the first in the US with nearby Jamestown Island the first
permanent English settlement in 1607. Yorktown Battlefield and
Visitors Center is also nearby. The Sherwood Forest Plantation
was formerly owned by President John Tyler and President
William H. Harrison, while Shirley Plantation is the oldest
plantation in Virginia. Not to be eclipsed by the past there is
also the Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton.
RoseWood Village in Nellysford is more than a retirement
area as well, allowing for active, connected living with
fishing, mountain views and golfing in a resort setting that
you don’t have to leave as you are home. A learning/business
center, library, sports bar, restaurants, a fitness center,
heated pools, game room, tennis boating and landscaped areas to
enjoy. Horseback riding is just minutes away.
The medical facilities in Virginia are top notch also. An
example is the Mountain View Regional Medical Center, a 133 bed
full service hospital serving Norton and the surrounding area
with inpatient and outpatient services, including 24-hour
emergency services, medical, surgical and pediatrics services,
intensive care, surgical services and long-term care. A
surgical unit, intensive care, skilled and long term care units
offer a range of health services that can accommodate health
issues as well as prevention.
Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap has emergency
services, inpatient, outpatient and surgical and nurses
certified in Advance Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced
Life Support and Trauma Nurse Care Curriculum. A full range of
respiratory care and cardiology is available here as well. A
state of the art radiology department is at home here also.
Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap has quality
emergency care, intensive care and obstetrics, as well as a
medical/surgical/pediatric unit. Outpatient services include
radiology, physical therapy and surgical services as well as
